Why Rest Doesn’t Feel Restful? You Need To Know This ONE Thing

In my therapy work, I’ve noticed that many of my clients truly recognize the importance of rest and recovery.

They book a massage, schedule a spa day, or take time off work.

The goal is simple: lie down and do “nothing.”

I’m sure you’ve done this too.

And yet… You don’t actually feel rested.

Sometimes you even become more aware of how tense you are.

You notice your lower back aching, your shoulders staying tight, or your mind refusing to switch off.

Even when you do feel a bit of relief, it’s painfully temporary—the benefits of the massage fade within a day, often just a few hours.

If you’ve ever thought, “Why can’t I relax even when I’m supposed to be resting?”

…you’re not alone.

Most of us were taught that rest is about stopping activity:

You stop working.

You stop moving.

You stop thinking—or at least try to.

But biologically, that’s not how rest actually works.

From a nervous system perspective, rest isn’t about what you’re doing, it’s about whether your body feels safe enough to let go.

  • You can be lying completely still, but internally on high alert.
  • You can be on holiday and still feel “on edge.”
  • You can be getting a massage while your nervous system stays guarded and braced.

This has nothing to do with willpower.

It’s physiology.

It’s about readiness. Preparedness.

If you are a:

  • high-achieving individual
  • caregiver
  • mother
  • professional who carries a lot of responsibility

…then over time, your body has learned: “I need to stay prepared.”

Your nervous system may not yet feel safe enough to fully let go.

It hasn’t learned that it’s truly safe to stand down.
