The Psychology of Buying: Why We Never Feel Like Enough
Let’s talk about something that might feel a little uncomfortable… but also very real.
Let’s talk about collecting handbags.
You may immediately think of the Hermès Birkin or the Chanel Classic…
But actually, this isn’t just about luxurious handbags, or even about handbags at all. Because it’s not really about the handbag itself.
What does the psychology of buying tell us about why we shop?
Let’s be honest. No one is obsessed with handbags just because they love the leather or the storage space. It’s deeper than that.
The psychology of buying reveals that a purchase often represents:
- Success
- Identity
- Status
- “I’ve made it”
- “I’m doing okay in life”
It’s about the quiet, very human question underneath: Why do I keep needing more?
Why Do We Really Buy? The Deeper Psychology
On the surface, luxury handbags are practical and beautiful. They carry our lives, match our style, and feel luxurious against our skin. But the psychology of buying tells us the real pull is deeper.
There’s a fascinating concept called enclothed cognition, the idea that what we wear (or carry) doesn’t just change how others see us; it shapes how we think, feel, and behave.
Carrying a designer bag can literally trigger a psychological shift: more confidence, a sense of belonging, even subtle boosts in focus or performance because the item carries symbolic weight, “success,” “taste,” “I belong here.”
It’s like wearing a small piece of achievement every day.
How Does Dopamine Drive Buying Behavior?
Then there’s the chase itself.
The hunt for limited editions, waitlists, and rare finds floods the brain with dopamine, the “wanting” chemical.
Dopamine isn’t about lasting happiness; it’s about anticipation.
Scrolling and fantasizing about the unboxing, that part often feels better than actually owning it.
And yes, some bags hold or even gain value, turning the collection into a “smart” investment.
But let’s be honest: most of us aren’t purely in it for resale math.
The Psychology of Buying Goes Beyond Handbags
The pattern isn’t unique to handbags. It shows up everywhere.
I personally am not into handbags, but like everyone else, I have my “thing” that I like to collect and pursue.
I used to love “collecting” knowledge, constantly attending courses.
In academic circles, people who collect degrees and certifications for that next level of “proof” are sometimes called degree collectors.
And this applies to chasing promotions, followers, or bigger bank balances.
Different objects, same mechanism.
We’re building a sense of “enoughness” on the outside… because something inside still feels unfinished.
Is Shopping an Emotional Coping Mechanism?
When emotions like stress, loneliness, insecurity, or “not measuring up” go unprocessed, shopping becomes one of the fastest, most socially acceptable ways to sidestep them.
Retail therapy works, temporarily. It gives control, validation, a quick hit of “I matter.”
But the psychology of buying reveals a predictable loop: Want → Get → Temporary high → Drop → Want again.
And here’s the uncomfortable truth: you can own 10, 20, even 30 expensive bags… and still feel quietly empty.
Why?
Because the deeper need, for self-worth, emotional connection, meaning, true security in who you are, isn’t something external things can fill long-term.
You’re Not Shallow. You’re Human.
You’re not “too materialistic.”
You’re human, trying to meet a real emotional need in the ways our culture makes easiest.
Understanding the psychology of buying isn’t about judgment; it’s about awareness.
And awareness is where change begins.
If any of this hits home, if you’ve ever wondered why “one more” never quite closes the gap, listen to the full episode here:
In the episode, I unpack the psychology of buying without judgment, share how to spot when collecting tips from enjoyment into dependence, and explore gentle, realistic ways to start shifting the pattern… so the things you love enhance your life instead of carrying the weight of fixing it.
Or if you’re ready to go deeper, understand your own patterns, meet those inner needs, and build a life that feels fulfilling from the inside out, book a 1:1 session with me.
Sometimes the most powerful shift starts with someone walking beside you.
You deserve to feel enough… without needing to prove it.
